Notes:  I’ve always found it curious that, despite it’s high-rated, eight-season run, Ironside generated only this one adult tie-in novel. Given the nature of the series, I would have thought that the written word was an ideal medium for expanding on the adventures of The Chief and his team. Even then, this book is more of a curiosity than an effective companion to the series. The personalities of Ironside, Ed, Eve, and Mark that we encounter here bear little resemblance to the characters we saw on television. For example, the author suggests that Eve is sexually attracted to her mentor—something that seems unlikely in the context of what was presented to us in the series itself. Thompson is a highly respected author, however, and I suspect the reason the people in this novel are almost unrecognisable to us is because the book was written early in the development of the series, at a time when the only material available for him to view was the pilot film. If you bear this in mind when reading the novel, the story works perfectly well.
