Off the premiere, “Ironside“ continues to stand tall as a firstrate police drama series. Suspense on the opener was aided by a plot twist that is increasingly common this season and may represent something of a trend: the good bad-guy.

Storyline pertained to a male caller who repeatedly warns Chief Ironside (Raymond Burr) that someone will be killed, thus inviting the police sleuthing that eventually uncovers him. To make a short story long, the caller emerges as the son of a police sergeant (now dead) who had been dismissed from the force because he allegedly shot an unarmed suspect. If a certain witness to the shooting had appeared at the cop’s hearing, he would have been vindicated. And, through permutations too elaborate to explain here, his son’s telephone threats lead to the unmasking of the witness and the clearing of his late father’s name.

The action moved along at a fast pace as the process of tracing the mysterious phone calls unravelled. Raymond Burr is totally convincing as detective Chief Ironside. Dane Clark was guestar as the missing witness who eluded the police all those years, filling the role well. Of special note was the soft-spoken caller himself (Barry Brown.)
